U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle

This is a nice example of an original U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that was manufactured in 1886. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch variation marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight marked "R" on the upper right hand corner. The rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks with an "I" below it and an "A" on top. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler, two-piece trigger guard and mounted with a full one-piece walnut stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands, both marked with a "U" on the right side, slotted button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. "SWP/1886" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" and small stamped "B" on the underside behind the trigger guard.

Excellent. The barrel retains 97% original blue finish with some wear and thinning at the muzzle, a small worn spot (smooth gray) about midway, and a few minor scratches and handling marks. The remaining blue parts retain almost all of the original finish with wear on the rear barrel band, some edge wear and minor scratches on the trigger guard. The buttplate shows wear on the heel and toe. The breechblock retains 90% bright original case colors with light spotting and a dove gray on the balance. The stock is very fine with some scattered minor dents and dings. The cartouche is sharp. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
