This is an example of al Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured circa 1889. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the replacement low arch model marked "U.S./MODEL/1873". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/Eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks with an "I" on top . Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a smooth one-piece walnut stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands, button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. "SWP/1889" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" on the underside behind the trigger guard.

Condition: Very good as arsenal refurbished. The barrel shows traces of original blue finish mixed with smooth brown patina. The lock and hammer retain 90% original blue finish and the trigger guard and lower tang are a mix of original blue finish and smooth brown patina. The breech block retains 80% original faded case colors with a mottled gray patina on the balance. The stock is fine with a few small minor gouges, and overall some minor dents and dings. The action is excellent.
