This is a nice example of an original Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured circa 1886. The casehardened low arch breechblock is stamped "US/MODEL/1873" and the lock plate has the eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD." The left rear of the barrel has "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and inspection marks with the letter "A" stamped on top. The action has a three click tumbler. The barrel bands are marked "U" and the buttplate tang is marked "US". The full length stock has a clear "SWP/1886" cartouche on the wrist and a circled script "P" behind the trigger guard. The rifle has a slotted cleaning rod. The trowel bayonet has a wooden plug and a leather scabbard with hanger.

Excellent. The rifle retains 97% original blue finish with a faint plum patina on the balance. The breechblock and tang retain most of the original case colors. The stock is excellent with a gouge (left and some minor handling marks. The cartouche is crisp and clear. Missing front windage screw on rear sight. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet has a bright blade and the handle retains 40% original blue finish. The reproduction scabbard has tight stitching.
