This is an example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Rifle that was manufactured circa 1887. The rifle has the following parts blued; barrel, barrel bands, lock plate, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate. The breechblock and top rear tang are casehardened. The lock plate is stamped with the Eagle and shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines. The top of the breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884" in three lines. The left side of the barrel is stamped with the Ordnance "V/P Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks just ahead of the receiver. The rifle has the Buffington rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation, and the leaf of the sight is stamped with an "R" (rifle). It is fitted with the correct low arch breechblock, three-click tumbler and grooved trigger. The heel of the buttplate is stamped with "U.S.". The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of the script initials "SWP" over the date "1887" in a rectangle with flattened corners. There is a circled script "P" proof mark on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard finial. With a blue cleaning rod and a blue "U.S." marked socket bayonet.

Condition: Very fine, 85% plus of the original blue finish remains with some wear on the barrel bands, lock plate, trigger guard and buttplate. There is some scattered freckling and some spots of discoloration/oxidation on the blued components of the lock plate. The stock is also very fine with a number of scattered dings, scattered minor scratches, a sharp cartouche and a sharp proof. The bayonet is also very fine with 95% blue finish with some scattered freckling and a scuff at the tip.
