U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine with Scarce Georgia Militia Marking

The lock plate has the eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" stamped ahead of the hammer and the low arch breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Equipped with a Buffington rear sight marked with a letter "C". The left rear side of the barrel has traces of a proof mark. Action has a three click tumbler. The single barrel band is stamped with the letter "U" and the buttplate tang has "US". The stock has a saddle ring bar (no ring) and a "SWP/1889" cartouche on the left side, "GA" on the comb, a circled "P" behind the trigger guard, "M/44" near the tang and buttplate with compartment. The "GA" stock marking denotes that the carbine was issued to the Georgia Militia (now the Georgia National Guard). The Georgia National Guard has a long and distinguished heritage that dates to 1733 with Oglethorpe's militia which fought with the British against the Spanish in 1742. The Georgia National Guard served with Washington's Army during the Revolution, aided the War for Texas Independence and saw action in the Seminole Wars, the Mexican-American War, fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and was part of the occupation of Cuba in 1899.
