U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine
This is an example of a U.S. Model 1879 Springfield Carbine assembled with later Model 1884 parts. Nearly all of the Model 1879 Carbines were issued to cavalry regiments on the frontier. The barrel has a fixed front sight and a single barrel band forward of the rear adjustable Buffington sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked "V / P / eagle head / P". "US / Model / 1873" is marked on top of the casehardened, low arch breechblock. The hammer is the second pattern with oval stamped checkering. The blued lock plate is marked with the Springfield Eagle and Shield motif followed by: "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the oval script "SWP / 1888" and the circled "P" is stamped behind the lower tang. Iron buttstock with compartment for a jointed, complete with the three-piece cleaning rod and ruptured shell extractor.
