U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle

Manufactured in 1882. The rear sight is graduated to 1,200 yards with a base graduated 1-5. The rear sight leaf and base are marked with the letter "R" (rifle). The left rear of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head/P" proofs and the top of the barrel at the breech is stamped with the letter "R" (double stamped). The breech block is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873" and the lock plate is marked with the eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD". Three-click tumbler and smooth trigger. Blue finish with casehardened breech block and barrel tang and oil finished walnut stock. The stock wrist has a script "SWP/1882" boxed cartouche and a circled "P" is stamped behind the trigger guard. The buttplate has the "US" marking on the tang.

Very fine. The rifle retains 85% original blue finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The breech block and tang retain 75% original case colors. The stock is also very fine with some very scattered minor handling marks. The cartouche is clear. Mechanically excellent.
