U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine
This carbine features the improved buckhorn rear sight with the "C" and base markings moved from the right to the left side of the sight, low arch breechblock, and "U" stamped barrel band with no provisions for a stacking swivel. The lock is marked with the eagle/shield motif followed by "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". The casehardened breechblock is stamped "U.S. / MODEL/ 1873". The left side of the barrel is marked "V/P/Eagle Head/P" parallel to the bore just ahead of the receiver. The receiver has a five pointed star following the serial number. The significance of the star mark has not been definitely determined, but it has been speculated that this carbine is an example of the carbine that were repaired and re-issued with replacement receivers that were refurbished to new condition by Springfield Armory. The buttstock, which has no visible cartouche, has a "US" marked buttplate with compartment and a saddle ring bar with ring mounted on the left side.

Very good plus. The barrel has strong traces of original blue remaining in the protected areas near the breech with the balance a smooth brown patina. The barrel band, two piece trigger guard and lock retain approximately 30% original blue finish (strongest on the hammer) with the balance a smooth brown patina. The breechblock has a smooth silver/gray patina. There is a hairline crack near a saddle ring bar base and a dent caused by the breechblock release lever, otherwise the refinished stock is very good with some minor dings and scratches. Action is fine.
