This is an example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Carbine with star-prefix serial number. It has been concluded that the star-prefixed carbines were repaired and re-issued carbines with replacement receivers that were refurbished by Springfield Armory. The lock plate has the eagle/shield motif with "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and the breech block is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873." Hammer with three notch tumbler, "C" marked rear sight graduated to 1,500 yards with base graduated "1-8" and "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks on left side of barrel. Short type stock with saddle bar with ring, "US" marked buttplate tang and "SWP/1881" script wrist cartouche. Comes with two one-piece iron cleaning rods.

Good as arsenal refurbished (see above). The carbine retains traces of the blue finish in and around the protected areas with the balance a smooth mottled brown patina. The breech block retains is mostly a silvered out gray. Hairline stress metal flaw crack present on hammer. The stock is also good with a couple gouges and a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. The cartouche is faint but legible. Mechanically fine.
