U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Pre-Custer Battle Serial Range Trapdoor Carbine

Produced in the range of carbines that may have been issued to Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry, with a number of features that were phased out or altered following the Battle of Little Bighorn. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with the base graduated to 500 yards and the staff to 2,000. The high arch breechblock is marked "MODEL/1873/eagle head/crossed arrows/US" and the lock is fitted with a 2-click tumbler and marked with an eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873". The stock is an early "long wrist" style, with a stacking ring on the barrel band, a saddle ring on the left side and a smooth "US" marked buttplate, produced without provisions for a storage compartment.

Very good. The barrel shows a mixed gray and brown patina, with scattered pitting. The sights are offset slightly to the right. Traces of the dark casehardened pattern remain on the breechblock, tang and lock plate. The stock is good, with a few cracks around the lock plate, sling bar, upper tang and trigger guard, with scattered scuffs and scratches. Mechanically fine.
