U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor Rifle

Manufactured by Springfield Armory circa 1870 to 1873 as part of a cost effective method for the Government that took left over muzzle loaders and converted them into single shot metallic breech loaders. The 1864 dated Civil War era lock plate has the standard U.S./Springfield markings and the breechblock is marked "MODEL/1870/eagle head/cross arrows/U.S." The length of the arch on the underside of the breechblock is 2 3/16 inches. Blade front sight/bayonet lug with an open rear sight slot. The full length stock has three script letter cartouches on the left flat and a "US" marked buttplate.

Very good. The rifle has a bright appearance with a smooth dark patina on the lock, hammer, receiver and breechblock. The stock is also very good with a sliver of wood missing from the forearm, a couple missing surface chips, a hairline crack on the left flat and a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. Missing rear sight.
