U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor Rifle with Unit Markings

This is a desirable low production Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor rifle with a unit marked barrel . The lock plate of this rifle is marked with "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD" followed by the Springfield Armory Eagle and is dated 1863 on the end of the lock plate. It is fitted with the low arch breechblock marked: "Model/1870"/Eagle Head proof/Crossed Arrows and U.S.", The right rear end of the barrel has been hand stamped "D 9th REGT." and "1602" on the left side. It has the fixed front sight with the flip up rear sight graduated, "2-9" on the back side of the slide. It has the original full length walnut stock with two barrel bands The stock has two circled cartouches, on the left side, a "ESA" and a "FBK" with a single encircled "P" proof behind the trigger guard plate. The breechblock and receiver have a casehardened finish with all the remaining parts being armory bright.

Very good with "silvered out" case hardened finish on the receiver and breech block with the remaining parts having an unpolished armory bright finish. The stock is also very good with a nice original finish with numerous little handling marks, light pressure dents and dings overall with visible proofs. Mechanically fine.
