This is an example of a Springfield 1868 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured circa 1869. The barrel, barrel bands and trigger guard are all National Armory Bright. The breechblock is blackened and the hammer and lock plate are casehardened. Has a fixed front sight/bayonet lug and a long range flip up elevation adjustable rear sight. The left side of the barrel and breechblock are stamped with the serial number "5519", the top of the breechblock is stamped "1869/eagle head/U.S.", the right side of the barrel at the breech end is stamped with an "X", the lock plate is marked with the eagle over "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and is dated "1863", both barrel bands are marked "U", the top of the buttplate is stamped "U.S." and there is an "A" stamped on the front tang of the trigger guard. The stock has a faint oval cartouche on the left flat and two illegible letters stamped behind the trigger guard tang. With a correct cleaning rod.

Condition: Near fine, the bright finished components remain bright with some minor discoloration, scattered minor pitting overall and some scattered minor scratches. The breechblock retains half of the thinned original blackened finish with some small areas of discoloration. The hammer and lock plate retain most of the muted original case colors.The rear sight ladder is broken. The lightly sanded stock is very good with scattered minor dings and scratches.
