U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Rifle-Musket, Smoothbore Conversion
Produced as a Type II rifle-musket, and later bored out to serve as a foraging gun. Fixed blade front and 3-leaf folding rear sights on the barrel, which is marked "V/ P/ eagle head" on the upper left side and has the spread wing eagle on the bolster. Lock is dated "1864" behind the hammer and marked "U.S./ Springfield" ahead, with the American Eagle stamp. Ramrod absent. Smooth straight grip stock with 3 barrel bands, sling swivels, two inspectors cartouches on the reverse of the lock plate, and an unmarked buttplate.

Condition: Good, with the barrel showing a bright gray patina, darker on the lock and hammer with heavy pitting, strongest around the nipple. Stock is good as repaired, with a section of replaced wood on the left side ahead of the wrist, scattered chipping and pressure dents, along with some varnish loss. Mechanically fine.
