Manufactured from 1855 to 1857 with around 4,021 produced. Most of these pistol-carbines were issued to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments. The pistol-carbines were issued as carbines in conjunction with percussion revolvers and continued to be issued to Federal cavalry regiments well into the Civil War. This example is without the stock and has a blade front sight with the rear sight removed and the barrel bored out to smooth bore. The upper tang is dated 1855. The lock plate is dated "1856" behind the hammer with "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" (faint) marked in front of the Maynard primer door which has a faint American eagle. The bolster has a removable cleanout screw. The left side of the barrel at the breech has a faint eagle head proof. Smooth pistol grip stock, with a swiveling iron ramrod. The trigger guard, single barrel band, and forend cap are brass with an iron stock yoke. A lanyard ring is mounted on the buttcap and the single barrel band has a sling swivel.
