U.S. Springfield Model 1847 percussion Sappers Musketoon with saber bayonet (no scabbard), .69 cal., 26” barrel, two barrel bands, lockplate dated 1847, lug for saber type bayonet mounted on right side of upper barrel band and double steel large type guides for bayonet affixed to right side of barrel near muzzle; sling swivels on toe of butt stock and on rear barrel band; flared iron ramrod, wood stock, saber bayonet has cast scales type brass grip with simple brass cross guard . This rare variation is in overall good condition showing a dark patina on metal surfaces with general areas of erosion on the barrel and pitting around the firing area; V, P and eagle head proofs are visible on the left side of the barrel at breech; lockplate markings are good, action is good, bore is dark, wood is overall good to very good; saber bayonet is also good with US on one side of hilt and N.P. Ames, Cabotville, 1847 on the other side of the hilt; pommel is stamped “27” and “90” while one side of the cross guard is stamped “39”, the other “7”. The chances of finding another Sappers Musketoon with saber bayonet are fairly slim given a total quantity of only approx. 830 manufactured. From an old estate. Est.: $1,250-$2,500+.
