The chief shoulder arm of frontier Dragoon and Cavalry regiments until the adoption of the Sharps Carbine, the 1847 Musketoons were issued to volunteer units during the Civil War, and are a key piece for any collection of U.S. Cavalry arms and equipment. Dated 1853 on the lock and tang, with a blade sight on the front barrel band and a swiveling retainer chain for the iron ramrod. A 9 1/2" long saddle ring bar runs from the reverse plate to the second barrel band. Smooth stock, with "U.S." marked brass buttplate and "NH" on the left buttstock.

Condition: Good, with a mixed brown and gray patina overall, lighter in the protected areas and bright under the barrel band. Some mild spotting present on the barrel. Stock is refinished, with a few dark spots, mild chipping and scattered dents.
