U.S. Springfield Model 1842 Percussion Musket with Bayonet
Manufactured from 1844 to 1855. Marked 1853 on barrel tang with the eagle shield over "US" in front of the hammer and "SPRING / FIELD / 1853" behind the hammer. The left side rear of the barrel is marked with the "V / P / eagle head" proofmarks. The lock is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1845" vertically behind the hammer and the eagle shield motif over "US" in front of the hammer. The left stock flat has a very faint oval and boxed cartouche. Fixed front blade sight mounted on the front barrel band, no rear sight (correct), bayonet lug mounted on the underside of the barrel, sling swivel on the middle barrel band and on the front of the trigger guard, and iron ramrod with a trumpet head. Mounted with a full straight grip stock with flat iron buttplate marked "US" on the tang. Complete with "U.S." marked socket bayonet.

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a silver gray patina with scattered minor pitting on the barrel. The stock has been lightly sanded and reoiled, but remains very good with some scattered minor scuffs and dents. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet is good with a dark mottled patina and minor pitting.
