U.S. Springfield Model 1842 Percussion Conversion Musket Dated 1844
This is an example of a pre-Mexican American War U.S. Springfield Model 1842 musket made in 1844 (the first year production for the Model 1842). The barrel is proofed with a "V / P eagle head" on the left side of the breech. The barrel tang has no visible date. "SPRING / FIELD / 1844" is marked on the lock plate behind the hammer, the American eagle and shield motif over "U S" in front of the hammer, and "US" is marked on top of the heel of the buttplate. The musket has a bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel, front sight on the front barrel band and ramrod with a trumpet shaped head. The left side of the buttstock is stamped "BW".

Good. Overall the musket has a smooth brown-gray patina, with some scattered mild spotting on the action. The period sanded, reoiled stock is good with the exception of a hairline crack near the lock and some minor dings and scratches overall. Mechanically fine.
