U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Percussion Conversion Rifle

Estimate: $1600 - 2500
This is a very fine example of an armory percussion converted U.S. Model 1816 Springfield musket. The conversion consists of a cone type nipple on the barrel, known as the "Belgian Alteration" and installing a percussion hammer. The lock parts have been removed and a brass plate installed in the pan cavity. The rear of the lock is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1830" vertically and the eagle motif over "U.S." is in front of the hammer. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "P/eagle head/V" proofs. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked with an "a" and "71" and the barrel tang is dated "1830". The inside of the trigger guard is marked "EB", the front of the lower tang "EA" and the rear of the lower tang "B". Iron mountings, bayonet lug, brass blade front sight on the front barrel band, iron ramrod with a trumpet head and mounted with a smooth full straight grip stock with two clear oval cartouches on the left flat. "DC." and an oval cartouche directly behind the lower tang and "US" marked buttplate tang.
BBL: 42 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 69
Finish: brown
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very fine, appears unissued. The lock and hammer remain bright with some mild discoloration. The remaining parts retain 95% plus original brown finish with some scratches and wear on the muzzle end of the barrel from a socket bayonet (not included) and some thinning on the barrel bands and lower tang. There is a scratch on the right side on the front barrel band. With the exception of a minor 1 inch crack behind the lock, the revarnished stock is very fine with a few minor dings on the right side of the wrist and a few light handling marks overall. The markings are sharp. Mechanically excellent.
