U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Hewes & Phillips 1861 Conversion Percussion Musket
This is an example of a Model 1816 Springfield Musket with bolster conversion performed by Hewes & Phillips of Newark, New Jersey, during the Civil War. It features a replacement breech with integral bolster and conversion hammer. The lock is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1831" behind the hammer and the eagle shield motif over "US" in front of the hammer. The top of the barrel behind the rear sight is marked "H&P", below that is a recessed "P" in a circle, the left flat is marked "N J", and the tang is dated "1861". The left stock flat has a circled script "A / 2" cartouche and a hand inscribed Roman numeral ("XXXIII"). The bottom of the stock behind the tang is marked with an illegible marking and a clear circled "JS" cartouche. The musket has a blade front sight and three leaf rear sight (middle leaf broken), three barrel bands, clean out screw on the bolster, sling swivels, iron ramrod with a button style head and smooth iron buttplate.

Condition: Very good, with the metal surfaces having a dark brown mottled patina, with some minor pitting. The stock is fine with some minor dings and scratches and a couple minor dents. The hammer screw is absent, otherwise the action functions fine.
