U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Flintlock Ship's Musket Dated 1810
This Model 1795 Type III musket has a 42 inch barrel, a major distinguishing feature of the Ship's Musket version of the Model 1795. The exact dates of production of the Ship Musket are unknown, as are the quantities produced. The 1810 dated lock has the standard downward arching "SPRINGFIELD" under the "U.S. / eagle" motif (traces remain) in front of the hammer. The three spring secured barrel bands are evenly spaced, with the front band having a brass blade front sight. The barrel has a bayonet lug correctly 1 1/4 inches from muzzle and is marked "1 / V" and "P / eagle head / V" at the breech. "O" is marked on the buttplate tang and "2" is stamped on the trigger guard screws. Included is a laminated handwritten letter dated January 15, 1927 (from a J. Howard Davis) explaining how he obtained this musket in 1857 at the age of eight.

Very good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned many years ago and have since aged. There is some pin prick pitting, with minor flash pitting. The varnished stock is also very good with a repaired forearm and large chip at the upper tang, few chips near the buttplate heel, along with some scattered minor dings and scratches. The initials "JB" are carved on the left stock flat. A solid representative War of 1812 Era primary issue U.S. Springfield Armory musket.
