U.S. Springfield Armory Type III Model 1816 Flintlock Musket

This Type III Model 1816 musket was manufactured in 1831. The Model 1816 Musket was the primary infantry long arm during the Mexican War and many muskets were converted to percussion in the 1850s. They were extensively issued by both the Federal and Confederate armies during the first two years of the Civil War. This musket was converted to percussion and then re-converted back to the flintlock configuration. The musket had an National Armory bright finish. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1831" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and "eagle/shield/U.S." stamped ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1835". The left rear of the barrel is marked "US/NWP/P". The stock is the correct full length military version. The left side stock flat has a circled "EG" cartouche. The top of the comb is stamped with a "M" followed by "20" and clear oval cartouche. The buttplate tang is marked "US". Complete with the correct button head iron ramrod.

Condition: Fine. The metal surfaces have a smooth brownish gray patina. The stock is very fine with some minor dents and dings. The markings and cartouches are clear. The action is excellent.
