U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1888 Rod Bayonet Trapdoor Rifle
The rear of the barrel is correctly marked with the "V P eagle head P" proof and inspection marks. The top at the breech is marked "I". The top of the breechblock is marked "US / MODEL / 1884". The lock plate is marked with the American Eagle next to "U. S. / SPRINGFIELD". The heel of the buttplate is marked "US / E / 18". The oil finished walnut stock is marked with the boxed "SWP / 1891" final inspection cartouche on the left wrist and a circled "P" behind the trigger guard. The rifle has a Buffington rear sight, blade front sight, one piece trigger guard, serrated trigger, ramrod bayonet and smooth buttplate with a trapdoor.

Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains scattered traces of original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The breechblock retains some silvered out original case colors with flashes of case colors on the upper tang. Overall there is some scattered minor spotting. The stock is also very good with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
