Made in 1858, this is a fine example of a U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1855 Rifled-Musket. Blade front and early pattern folding long range ladder rear sight, with "V/ P/ eagle head" stamps on the upper left side of the barrel and "1858" on top. The lock is equipped with a functional Maynard primer, with a clean-out screw on the bolster, American Eagle on the primer door, "1858" to the rear and "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD" ahead. Smooth straight grip stock, with a tulip head ramrod, brass forearm tip, three "U" marked barrel bands, a faint cartouche opposite the lock, and a "US" marked buttplate. With a U.S. Model 1855 socket bayonet, 18" triangular blade with "US" marked shank. Produced from 1857 to 1861, most of these muskets were issued to regular Army and Volunteer units at the start of the Civil War.
BBL: 40 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 58 percussion

Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Good. Areas of moderate pitting are visible around the nipple, the tang, and the buttplate heel, with light scattered pitting on the barrel. The lock and hammer are in fine condition with smooth metal surfaces and crisp markings. The tape primer is complete and functional. Stock is good as re-oiled, with some rounding of the flats and pressure dents. The bayonet has been cleaned and the tip is slightly bent; the overall condition is very good. Mechanically fine. A solid example of an important Civil War rifle-musket.
