This is a very nice example of the unique and highly desirable Springfield Model 1855 Pistol Carbine with attachable stock. The pistol carbine features the Maynard self-priming device, a swivel ramrod with button head, clean out screw on the nipple bolster and a three leaf folding rear sight graduated to 400 yards. Springfield Armory manufactured 4,021 pistol carbines between 1855 and 1857. The Model 1855 Pistol Carbine was widely issued to the U.S. dragoon and cavalry regiments prior to 1861 and remained in limited service during the first years of the Civil War. The pistol-carbine has a "National Armory Bright" barrel, ramrod, lock plate and back strap. The pistol and stock mountings are all brass. The door of the Maynard magazine is stamped with the Springfield eagle and shield. The lock is dated "1856" behind the hammer and marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the primer magazine. The barrel tang is dated "1855" and the left barrel flat has the "V/P/eaglehead" proof and inspection marks. The butt cap and stock hardware are both numbered "14". The stock buttplate is marked "U.S." ahead of the buttplate screw.
