U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1795 Type III Flintlock Musket
This is a fine example of a pre-war of 1812 U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1795, Type III, Flintlock Musket with the distinctive, integral, forged, rounded flash pan, and trigger guard with rounded finials at both ends. Brass blade front sight on the barrel band, with a bayonet band near the muzzle "V/ P/ eagle head/ V" on the left side of the breech. The lock plate has beveled edges with a pointed tip on the rear, with "1808" behind the hammer and marked ahead with a script "US" over the Springfield Eagle and Shield motif above "SPRINGFIELD" in a upward curve. Smooth straight grip stock, with 3 band-spring secured barrel bands, bottom tipped straight shank ramrod, sling swivels, inverted "V" inspection mark on the left flat, "I.S." and a second "V" are stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard finial, low unfluted comb with "fish belly" bottom and a flat buttplate. The musket appears to be in the original flintlock configuration.
