U.S. Springfield Armory M1903A1 National Match Rifle with U.S.M.C. Unertl Telescopic Sight and Micarta Scope Can

Model 1903A1 National Match (NM) Rifle manufactured by the Springfield Armory c. 1932. The Springfield Armory manufactured 815 M1903A1 NM rifles in Fiscal Year 1932. This rifle is listed as "NM" in the "SUMMARY OF D.C.M. RIFLE SALES 1922-1942" published by the Springfield Research Service. The rifle has the standard NM features which includes a star-gauge mark on the barrel muzzle, star-gauge number on the top of the barrel in front of the rear sight base, polished bolt and extractor, polished receiver rails and serial number, "1310684" stamped on the underside of the stock ahead of the lower sling swivel. The rifle has a modified handguard, the barrel and receiver have been drilled and tapped for Unertl telescopic bases. The rifle is fitted with Unertl U.S.M.C. style, aluminum mounts and an 8X Unertl Marine Corps telescopic sight. The top of the scope tube is stamped "J.UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER/2730". The rifle receiver is also drilled and tapped for a Lyman 48C micrometer rear sight and the stock is inletted for the sight base. The rear sight is fitted with a U.S.M.C. style drift slide with 1/10 inch peep; the front sight has a standard Springfield blade. The top of the bolt and bolt handle have been milled flat to improve clearance with a telescopic sight. The rifle has the standard deeply checkered buttplate with butt-trap and grooved trigger. The striker has "C.V." (chrome vanadium) markings on the right side and a drawing number on the left. The safety and magazine cut-off have block letter markings. The barrel is roll stamped "S A/'Ordnance 'Shell&Flame'/11-32" in three lines behind the rear sight. The receiver has the standard Springfield Armory markings and serial number. The inside of the stock pistol grip is stamped with a circled block, "P" proofmark and the left side of the stock is stamped with the "D.A.L" final inspection mark. The receiver lacks the additional gas port on the right side added to Marine M1903 rifles in the mid-late 1930s. The bolt has a single small gas hole. The rifle has a parkerized finish on the barrel, receiver, trigger guard and the components. The bolt, rear sight face and "ON" side of the magazine cut-off are polished bright. The walnut stock and handguard are oil finished. The scope bases are casehardened, the mounts have a black anodized finish and the scope tube is blue. The micarta scope can is painted olive drab and has olive drab web fittings.

Manufucture: Springfield Armory U.S.
Model: 1903A1
BBL: 24 Inch
Stock: walnut
Guage: 30 06
Finish: parkerized
Grips:
Serial Number: 1310684

Fine as assembled. The barrel, receiver and other components retains 75% of the original black-green parkerized finish. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. The bolt has been repolished and the serial number electro penciled on the bolt body is not visible (the bolt may be a replacement). The stock has been sanded and reoiled and the "D.A.L." final inspection mark is very faint; the proofmarking is light but fully legible. The scope bases and mounts are very fine and retain nearly all of the original finish. The scope optics are clear and the fine cross-hair with center dot aperture are intact. The scope tube has fine pitting and may have been refinished. The scarce micarta scope can is excellent. This is a very good representative example of a M1903A1 Springfield National Match Rifle with U.S.M.C. Unertl telescopic sight and can.
