This is an example of a Springfield Model 1840, which represents the last flintlock musket manufactured by Springfield Armory. The lock is marked "SPRING/ FIELD/ 1841" vertically behind the hammer and the eagle and shield over "US" ahead of the hammer. The upper left breech end of the barrel is marked with the "V / P / eagle head" proofs and the barrel tang is dated "1842". Brass blade sight on the front barrel band, sling swivel on the middle, (absent), sling swivel on the front of the trigger guard and brass flash pan. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with two unreadable oval cartouches on the left flat and "US" marked on the buttplate tang. Complete with an original trumpet head steel ram rod.

Condition: Very good as professionally reconverted. There are areas of bright steel on the barrel and trigger guard, which have an overall mottled finish and scattered minor pitting. The buttplate has a dark brown patina with heavier pitting. The lock and hardware surfaces have a dark mottled gray patina, and the barrel bands are pitted with a dark brow on the front and rear bands. The stock is fine, with some minor cracks, chips and dings associated with a gun of this age. The action is fine.
