U.S. Springfield Armory 1840 Flintlock Musket
The Model 1840 smoothbore musket was the last flintlock musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory. The musket has a barrel with bayonet lug on the underside and secured by three barrel bands, with "P / eagle head / V" stamped on the left side at the breech. The lock features a detachable brass pan, with "SPRING / FIELD / 1842" marked behind the hammer and the eagle/shield motif over "US" below the flash pan. It has a ramrod with button head. The stock has no visible markings. Virtually all Model 1840 muskets were converted to percussion and most saw subsequent service during the Civil War.

Fair. The reconverted (back to flintlock) musket has a smooth gray patina with speckled discoloration. There is minor pitting (mostly on the trigger guard and front barrel band), with some deep pitting at the breech. The stock is fair with minor cracks located near the upper tang, trigger guard, lock and side plate, with chipping along the grain and a few minor gouges. Action needs work as the hammer does not properly hold a full cock position.
