The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1841" verticaly behind the hammer and the eagle and shield over "US" ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1842". "V/Eagle head" proofs are present on the the upper left rear side of the barrel. It has a sling swivel on the front of the trigger guard and brass flash pan. The smooth straight grip stock has two oval cartouches (faint) on the left flat, a "US" marked buttplate and three barrel bands with the front band having a brass blade sight. The musket has an original trumpet head steel ramrod. The Springfield Model 1840 was the last flintlock musket manufactured by Springfield Armory.

Condition: Very good as professionally reconverted. There are areas of bright steel on the barrel and trigger guard which have an overall mottled finish with scattered minor pitting. The buttplate has a dark brown patina with heavier pitting. The lock and hardware surfaces have a dark mottled gray patina and the barrel bands are pitted with a dark brown on the front and rear bands. Middle barrel band missing sling swivel. The stock is fine, with some minor cracks, chips and dings associated with a gun of this age. The action is fine.
