U.S. Springfield 1881 Forager Shotgun
U.S. Springfield model 1881 Trapdoor "Forager" Shotgun. This 20 gauge shotgun with serial number 1122, is one of only 1,376 examples produced. This variation of the trapdoor was used by hunters and scouts primarily at western outposts in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The barrel shows a good deal of original bluing with some surface oxidation that should clean up. There remains a small amount of case coloring on the breech. The lock plate is a mix of silver and blue and is stamped "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873" along side the Federal Eagle. Receiver has been enlarged to accept a 20 gauge brass shell. The breech block has only the date “1881” stamped in italic style numerals. Mechanics are tight and function as expected. Overall a very nice and solid example of an exceptionally rare variation of a military marked trapdoor rifle. Antique.
