After the government dropped the Schofield as an issue cavalry sidearm, the remaining inventory was sold off as military surplus. Many were sold to National Guard units and the remainder to Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, N.Y. dealers and other dealers. The barrels on these revolvers were shortened to 5 inches on many of the revolvers and in turn were sold to Wells Fargo & Co., ( this specimen is not one of them). Blade front sight and latch notch rear sight, with the two line address and patent markings on the left side of the ejector housing and the Schofield patent date on the right. The bottom of the barrel lug is marked with a "W" and "P". The butt is marked with the serial number and "U.S." on the heel. Matching serial number on the rear cylinder face over the letter "W" and "P". The letter "W" is also stamped on the top of the frame under the cylinder. The revolver is blue with a casehardened trigger guard and hammer. The revolver is fitted with smooth walnut grips with the remnants of a cartouche on the lower left panel.
BBL: 5 inch solid rib
Stock:

The grips are fine with a small hole on the bottom of the right panel and a few minor dings and scratches. The markings remain crisp and clear. There is some very slight play in the cylinder, otherwise the action is very good. A very fine example of a desirable variation Smith & Wesson Schofield revolver.
