U.S.S. TIRU DESK MODEL AND TABLE COVER
U.S.S. TIRU DESK MODEL AND TABLE COVER
Pair of items related to the USS TIRU, includes a bronze chrome-plated model of the vessel showing her in Guppie Class configuration. The 13 1/4" long model is set atop a 16" beveled wood base and bears exquisite detail, with stanchions with rails, hatches, propellers, deck gun and American flag all clearly depicted. This model was exhibited at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York, 1995-2007. Also present is the sub's ward room table cover, thick green thick felt with yellow-gold embroidery with the vessel's name and submarine service emblem, approx. 4' x 8'. The model bears just traces of surface oxidation, else very good. TIRU, built in 1944 as a Balao-class submarine, remained uncompleted for three years as a result of the curtailment of the submarine building program at the end of World War II. In the fall of 1947, the Navy decided to complete TIRU as a "Guppy" ("Greater Underwater Propulsive Power") snorkel boat. Her altered design incorporated improvements from the Navy's recent combat experience and German technical development. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
