Small 1" x 1 1/2" brass medal presented to guests attending the launching of the battleship U.S.S. ARIZONA - the medal made of brass salvaged from the U.S.S. MAINE which had exploded in Havana 17 years earlier. These medals were presented by the vessel's sponsor, Mrs. William Hoggan, to the official guests. The ARIZONA was built in Brooklyn and launched before a large crowd on June 19, 1915. Twenty-six years later, the ARIZONA would of course share the dreadful fate of the MAINE, but in a harbor thousands of miules away. Also included is a blue glass paperweight, 3 1/2" dia., 1" thick, showing the ARIZONA in relief, date of issue unknown. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
