This is an example of a U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket (from the contract for 30,000 muskets) manufactured by E. Robinson of New York City. The lock plate is marked with the earlier Robinson marking that consists of the date "1863" at the rear of the lock and "U.S." directly ahead of the hammer and "E.ROBINSON / NEW YORK" under the bolster. The top barrel flat is dated "1864" and the left rear is marked with the "V / P / eagle head" proofs. The bolster has an eagle motif. Correctly "U" marked barrel bands and the buttplate tang is marked "US". The rifle has the standard 'National Armory Bright' finish, blade front sight, folding leaf rear sight, sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and on the middle barrel band, tulip head steel ramrod and mounted with a full oil-finished black walnut stock with steel end cap and buttplate. The Model 1861 was the standard musket of the federal infantry during the Civil War.
BBL: 40 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 58 percussion
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Fair. The polished metal has a smooth brown and gray on the barrel and trigger guard, with some minor pitting on the trigger guard tang. The lock plate marking is dished out above U.S. with the maker markings appearing recut. The buttplate is bright, the lock silver gray with a small amount of minor pitting and the hammer has a mottled grayish brown patina. The stock is good with a few small gouges, several moderate dents on the left side of the forearm, and overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings remain clear. The action is excellent.
