U.S. Postal History 1857 Nebraska Territory
U.S. U.S. Postal History 1857 Nebraska Territory Letter With Fascinating Contents. August 2, Nebraska City four page letter from a son to his parents. The letter complains about the postal service in the Territory. The mail is great outside the Territory, but once a letter is inside the Territory it is delayed for weeks. His reasoning for why the service is so bad is that the Territory post office is run by "good Missouri Democrats" who "cannot read". He indicates that the "Democrat" is not the problem and he hopes he never has to deal with anyone from Missouri again. The letter goes on with how people living in the area make their living ( "bacon" and "I cannot bear to eat a particle (of it)"). There is much more detail given on life there including a bit of geography and other matters. But it should be noted that he discusses the life of "half breeds (French and Indians)" and the land they are given including what happens to claim jumpers. There is a reference to one Comfort who apparently is black because the writer notes that Comfort is better off buying a farm in Wisconsin, then he is starting from scratch in Nebraska and being among "White Folk". A marvelous letter which is accompanied by an 1863 Nebraska Territory cover franked by Scott 65 which has no relationship with the letter except they are both Territorials. Excellent condition for this. Estimate US$150-200
