U.S. Post Civil War Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword and Illinois Presentation Inscribed Lio
1) U.S. M. C. Lilley 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword, with 30" double edged blade with gold washed acid etched decoration. Gold-plated finished hilt, with patriotic designs on the counterguards, the folding reverse counter-guard, floral and lightning patterns on the knuckle guard, American Eagle and floral patterns on the pommel and a wire wrapped rayskin grip. Nickel finished sheath with engraved brass suspension bands and drag. 2) Lion Headed Officer's Sword, 30" straight single fuller blade with etched decoration, Svalling (Solingen) makers mark. "Hjalmar Kohler" is etched on the reverse of the blade. Brass hilt has pierced floral decoration, lion head pommel and wire wrapped rayskin grip. The nickel plated scabbard is inscribed "Presented to/ Col Hjalmar Kohler/ by/ FN - FJ & FM" on the brass throat. Born in Sweden, Hjalmar Kohler immigrated to Moline, Illinois in 1869, where he was involved in politics. He wa a tax collector, serving as aide-de-camp to two Illinois governors and was appointed Colonel in the state militia. He later spent two terms as County Clerk of Rock Island County, Illinois.

1) Good, with some spotting on the blade, 60% of the original gold, aged color on the visible brass, light wear on the grip and some dents, spotting and bubbling on the nickel sections. 2) Good, with some light spotting on the blade, mild wear on the grip, a mixed color on the guard and 50% of the original nickel on the sheath, which is missing the tip.
