U.S. North Model 1826 Percussion Navy Conversion Pistol
This is a very fine example of a percussion conversion of one of the 3000 Model 1826 Flintlock Navy Pistols manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut between 1826 and 1829. The pistol has been converted to percussion using a "Belgian Alteration". The "Belgian Alteration" was the only type of percussion conversion performed at the national arsenals. The pistol has a swivel ramrod with button head, brass front sight blade, oval shaped rear sight on the tang and belt hook attached to the left stock flat. The barrel, barrel band, lock, hammer, backstrap, trigger guard and butt are all polished bright. The pistol has a one-piece, black walnut, stock with oil finish. The lock plate is dated "1828" behind the hammer and marked: "U.S./S. NORTH" below the pan. The barrel is stamped: "U.S./ET/"P" perpendicular to the axis of the bore. A final inspection mark consisting of two encircled, script, initials is stamped on the left stock flat. The numeral "2" is stamped behind the inspection mark.

The lock plate has casehardened pattern that has most turned to a gray patina with some scattered surface discoloration. There is no flash pitting on the percussion nipple or surrounding portion of the barrel. The lock, barrel, and stock markings are crisp. The stock is also in fine condition. The edges of the barrel channel and flats are fairly sharp and show only limited handling wear. This is an attractive example of a North Model 1826 Percussion Navy pistol.
