Produced between 1862 and 1865, this is one of less than 7000 carbines purchased by the Navy for use aboard ships. The distinctive black leather cover was intended to minimize the barrel's exposure to salt water. Blade front and elevator rear sights on the barrel with the leather cover, properly stitched on the bottom and secured with a pair of screws at the breech. The right side of the receiver is marked: "SHARPS / & / HANKINS / PHILDA." and the left side is marked: "SHARPS/ PATENT/ 1859". The safety has been removed. Matching numbers present on the upper tang and lever, with matching partial numbers on the underside of the frame and barrel. Very good, with a mixed brown patina overall. The barrel leather has shrunk and torn in a few places, with a few sections absent, but is mostly intact and would rate very good. Stock is good, with cracking extending back from the upper tang, pressure dents and scuffs. Mechanically fine.
