U.S. Navy Model 1852 Officer's Sword, circa WWII or just after, 29.5" etched decorated blade features floral and naval motifs, and is engraved named to Wilmer E. Walker. Consigner notes that Walker was an instructor at Annapolis in 1938. Ricasso is marked "Germany" and maker marked by Hilborn-Hamburger, New York. Grip is grooved and covered in white sting ray skin, and wrapped with a beaded wire. Hilt features pierced floral decorations, and "USN" on the guard, and dolphin at top of knuckle bow. Pommel has an American eagle surrounded by stars. There is a gold sword knot cord, but it is missing the acorn at the bottom. Scabbard is black leather covered steel with gold gilt fittings. Condition is excellent, the hilt and scabbard fittings retain most all of their original bright gold gilt finish with some dark spots on the inside of the basket. Scabbard fittings show scratches and scuffs. Leather covering of the scabbard has some gouges, mainly on the edge of one side, and light scratches and scuffs overall. Blade is excellent, with bright nickel plating and silver frosting inside the engraving, and just a few very light scratches from use. Grip shows a couple of spots of soiling on the ray skin, and there is some play in the handle and guard. The original leather blade washer is present. Overall a nice example. Est.: $200-$300.
