In 1815, John Shuler received a contract from the U.S. Navy in which he used parts from his 1808 Army contract and parts furnished by Schuylkill Arsenal to assemble the Navy contract flintlock pistols (see, for example, page 232 of Smith and Bitters). This is an example of a Shuler U.S. Navy contract pistols. The pistol has a Ketland lock plate marked "W/KETLAND/&CO" and a barrel marked "LONDON" on the top at the breech with three British proofs on the left side. The pistol was inspected by USN LT. Edward Trenchard. Trenchard's inspector "ET" initials are stamped on the left stock flat. The smooth stock has brass furniture with a floral blossom engraved on the trigger guard.

Condition: Very good. The pistol has an attractive smooth untouched dark aged patina. The brass also has an untouched aged patina. The stock is also very good as repaired on the top rear lock plate with a couple cracks and some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically functions, but does not stay at full cock.
