U.S. Navy Contract Second Model Winchester-Hotchkiss Bolt Action Rifle

Manufactured circa 1881. It has been determined that all the Second Model rifles were manufactured by Springfield Armory using Winchester supplied actions and buttplates. A total of 999 Second Model rifles were made for the U.S. Navy in 1881-82. The left side of the receiver is marked with the standard three-line address/patent dates and the right side is marked with the serial number and the initials "H.N." for Henry Nettleton the Ordnance inspector. "H.N." is also stamped on the bolt handle and lug. The right side of the breech end of the barrel is stamped with "W.W.K./R" sub-inspector proofs and "V/P/Eagle Head" proof followed by "H.N." on the opposite. In between those proofs it is stamped with the U.S. Navy inspectors proof "US/Anchor". The safety is located on the top of the receiver and the barrel is fitted with a Buffington rear sight. Blue barrel, receiver, and trigger guard, the bolt is bright. The one-piece black walnut stock is oil-finished with a boxed "SWP/1881" cartouche on the upper left rear and a circled script "P" proof behind the trigger guard plate. There is a non-factory number "257-051" stamped on the left side of the stock.

Good as possibly arsenal refinished with traces of the blue finish mostly in protected areas with an exposed dark brown patina on the balance and thinning on the trigger guard bow and plate. The reoiled stock is very good with minimal handling marks and the cartouche and firing proof both being very faint. A good example of a desirable U.S. Navy contract Winchester-Hotchkiss bolt action rifle.
