U.S. Navy Ames Contract Model 1842 Percussion Navy Pistol
Also known as the Model 1843 or Navy Box Lock Model 1843 manufactured by N.P. Ames of Springfield Massachusetts and Henry Derringer of Philadelphia circa 1842 to 1847. Ames manufactured about 2,000 of these pistols. The pistol has a swivel type steel ramrod with a button shaped head and brass trigger guard, barrel band and buttcap. The barrel is marked "RC / P" (with "USN" and date no longer visible) and there are no sights. The lock is marked "USN / 1845" vertically at the rear and "N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS." below the hammer and fits flush to the stock. The stock is smooth one piece walnut with no visible cartouches or inspection markings.

Fair. Overall the pistol has a smooth dark patina with minor pitting (some deeper pitting on the barrel). The brass has a smooth dark aged patina. The front of the stock has been replacement, otherwise the wood is good with some chips absent (mostly near the lock plate and flat buttcap) and a few minor cracks on the flats.
