U.S. Naval inspected Jenks “Mule Ear” percussion single shot carbine, .54 cal., 24” round barrel, brown finish, brass trigger guard, barrel bands and butt plate, wood stock. This gun is in overall very good +condition showing considerable original brown on barrel and traces of original case colors on the lockplate; breech is correctly-marked “Wm. Jenks”, “USN”, “RC” inspected, “P” proofed and dated 1846; action is crisp,smooth bore is very good with round loading aperture (standard aperture is oval); lockplate is correctly marked; wood stock is overall very good with an old repair to the wrist and old spliced wood section betweenthe top of the lockplate and upper tang; right side of butt stock is stamped “R.S.S.”; nice patina to brass parts; slightly more than 4,000 of these guns were manufactured between 1843 and 1846 and was the onlymule-ear type firearm officially accepted by U.S. armed forces; stamping in stock appears period and should be further researched.
