U.S. NAVY UNIFORM GROUPING OF AN IWO JIMA AND OKINAWA VETERAN
World War II U.S. Navy uniform grouping of Seaman First Class Joshua R. Abell who served aboard LST-713. Present is the sailor's canvas hammock, blue wool dress cap (moth damaged), two white canvas "Donald Duck" caps, two white canvas work shirts, blue wool dress shirt with gold "Ruptured Duck" sewn thereon, blue wool jersey and matching pants. Most of these items are marked with Abell's name in stencil or ink. Also present are two 1944 photos of Abell and his company upon graduation, and a letter sent from the combat zone to his mother, Oct. 30, 1944. Overall very good. LST-713 participated in two operations: the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945, and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, which took place from April to June 1945. Following the war, LST-713 performed occupation duty in the Far East until February 1946.
