The chamber is marked "-U.S.N.- /[anchor]/No5781/-N.C.T.-" and the left side of the receiver is marked with the two line address/patent dates marking. Equipped with a blade front sight and a ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. The rear barrel band is marked "U" and has a sling swivel. Smooth full length pistol grip stock with handguard, buttstock sling swivel stud and buttplate with compartment. This is from the first contract that the Navy issued in 1898 for 10,000 rifles. Rifles were delivered and saw service in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Six hundred of them were issued to the 1st Marine Battalion, who were the first U.S. soldiers to invade Cuba. More were on board the U.S.S Maine when it was blown up in Havana harbor.

Condition:
Very fine. The barrel, receiver and bolt retain 90% original blue finish with loss at the muzzle and some minor thinning. The remaining metal surfaces retain half of the blue with the balance a mottled gray patina with the magazine retaining traces of original blue finish. The wood is also very fine with a number of minor pressure dents. Mechanically excellent.
