U.S. Model 1879 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle, #254682, .45-70 cal., 32-5/8'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, cartouched walnut stock with two barrel bands, ramrod, and early Model 1873 rear sight. Mfg'd from 1879-1885, rifle features slightly wider receiver no longer flush with barrel, low arch breechblock, and ramrod with small button tip. Barrel markings are eaglehead, large ''V'' and ''P'', rectangular cartouche above triggerguard on left side of stock ''SWP/1884''. Stock is ''P'' proofed below triggerguard tang, with rack mark ''21'' below ''P''. Rifle remains in pristine near new condition and appearing possibly unfired. Rifle has not been detail cleaned and shows light military cosmoline and dirt behind the trigger and under metal parts. Rifle also shows very light minor frosting to otherwise 98% blue barrel and vivid case colors. Stock with only the most minor pressure dings. Action is crisp, bore is mirror bright. Difficult to near impossible to upgrade. One of the best rifles of this type we have encountered. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
