Ricasso area is marked ''Springfield Armory, Springfield, Mass, USA'' in four lines. Handle is of wood covered with fishskin and wound with twisted gilt wire. Pommel is of the ''Phrygian'' helmet pattern and is decorated with laurel leaves and a Federal shield in relief. Half-basket guard with branches decorated with laurel leaves. Top of counter guard is decorated with war eagle clutching arrows; grip is encircled by 13 stars. Bottom of guard with sunburst design. Although actively carried by officers, neither edge was sharpened. All metal parts of the hilt are gilded brass. The original nickel-plated iron scabbard has gone missing over the years, but a correct type should be easily acquirable. Handle remains in remarkably nice condition. Leather washer is present and slightly compressed. Est.: $750-$1,000.
