U.S. Model 1870 Type 2 Rolling Block Navy Single Shot Rifle, # NVSN, .50-70 cal., 32-5/8" round barrel, blue and color case hardened finish, smooth hardwood stock and forend with two barrel bands, iron ramrod, sling swivels, and "U.S." marked smooth iron buttplate. Barley corn front sight and military ladder rear sights. Marked with a Navy "(anchor)" on the barrel at the breech, "P" over "H.B.R." for an inspection by Henry Bellows Robeson. Frame is marked with a "(Federal eagle)" over "U.S.N. / SPRINGFIELD / 1870". Mfg'd circa 1870-1871. Rifle is in fine overall condition, retaining approx. 85%-90% blue, with wear and finish loss at the muzzle, scratches and a few light spots of corrosion along the barrel. Receiver displays muted color case hardened finish drifting to a darker patina, with edge wear, and a couple buggered screw heads on the left side. Stock with moderate dents and marks associated with service use. The underside of the forend is stamped "J. HEKELER" and the left side is stamped "J. LEIMER". There was no information regarding inspectors or any officials who might have had cause to mark the rifle in this manner. Action functions well and locks up securely. Bright bore is fine, with some light erosion and sharp rifling. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique).
